Maritime Christianshavn & Holmen

Christianshavn is an artificial island founded in the early 16th century, inspired by the Dutch canal cities.

Today Christianshavn a lively part of Copenhagen with a bohemian atmosphere around the old and charming buildings.
Narrow cobbled streets, Michelin-starred restaurants and cozy cafes along the canal. On the other side of Knippelsbro is Christianshavn where you'll find it all.

Christianshavn is a popular place to stay, and it is easy to see why. It is close to downtown, on the water and there are plenty of restaurants and bars and a charming architecture.
You can enjoy a cold beer along the canal, eat a dinner at the World's Best Restaurant 2010 - 2014, noma, or get an experience out of the ordinary at the Opera. And do not forget to visit the Freetown Christiania, also located in Christianshavn.

Nyhavn

København's exuberant Old Port
The New Harbour from 1673 began a busy commercial port. Ships from all over the world would dock here, and life in the harbor was marked by sailors, pubs, girls and parties. The New Harbour was to Nyhavn, and the beautiful, old and crooked houses, Newharbour, is now beautifully renovated and filled with cozy restaurants and bars.

North Sealand

Cities - large and small in North Zealand Elsinore is located in North Zealand at the entrance to the Sound and the traffic center with ferries to Sweden. But the city is primarily home to Kronborg Castle, the scene of Shakespeare's play Hamlet. There are also many old half-timbered houses, quaint cobbled streets, a cathedral and a peaceful monastery in the busy city, where you will also find very cozy restaurants.

In Fredensborg is the royal family's spring and autumn residence, Fredensborg Palace. Nordsjælland There are many paths in the large castle park and fine views of Lake Esrum.

Hillerød's landmark is the large Frederiksborg Castle, which is home to the National History Museum including portrait gallery. The palace was the royal castle for many years, and there was easy access to the large hunting forests surrounding Hillerød, and centrally in North Zealand

On the coast of North Zealand you will find bathing and coastal towns in a row, eg Hornbæk, Gilleleje, Rågeleje, Tisvilde and Liseleje. Several of them have a past as a small fishing villages, this applies to Hornbæk, which today is considered the most exclusive of all the resorts, while Gilleleje still has a vibrant fishing port. From here and in other coastal towns along the Øresund and Kattegat helped fishermen during WW2 many Danish Jews to get to safety in Sweden, but in Gilleleje went wrong in October 1943 when 75 Jews who were hidden in the ceiling, was specified and captured. Art, culture and history of North Zealand
Also, artists and writers have been attracted by North Zealand countryside, and there are many interesting museums in North Zealand. Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk is Denmark's most visited museum with Danish and international art and frequent special exhibitions. Close by is Nivaagaard Painting Collection of ancient art, and in Rungsted find Karen Blixen Museum, which is housed in the author's home on Rungstedlund. Here she wrote her famous stories, including 'Out of Africa'.

Nivå Langgaards Painting Collection you will find in Nivå halfway between Rungsted and Humlebæk. Nivå Langgaards Painting Collection is one of Denmark's fine, old museums, which is particularly known for its exceptional collection of older European artists, including the country's only genuine Rembrandt.

In the northwestern part of North Zealand are large sand drift plantations, Asserbo Plantation and Tisvilde Fences, separated from the Kattegat with a large dune landscape. 

Tisvilde Fences consists of a rich variety of deciduous and coniferous trees. In plantages southern end lies Tibirke Bakker with remnants of heath, enebærbevoksninger and the partially overgrown Ellemose.

Arresø, the country's largest lake, is surrounded by reeds and reed swamps of varying width.
The eastern part of North Zealand of Gribskov to Elsinore is dominated by large forest and sølandskaber which is traversed by narrow river valleys. Gribskov, which is one of the largest forests consist of large contiguous beech and conifer forests here and there interrupted by damp forest meadows and small lakes, which are often home to rare plants and animals.

To the east Gribskov Esrum Lake, which is biologically interesting because it is very clean. Gurre Lake with its reed bed and surrounding forest areas is a value bird locality.

Kronborg Castle Hamlet´s Castle in Elsinore

Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, at the seaward approach to The Sound Øresund, is one of northern Europe s most important Renaissance castles. Known all over the world from Shakespeare s play Hamlet, it is also the most famous castle in Denmark and the Danish tourist attraction is visited each year by about 200,000 tourists.

King Frederik II s Kronborg Castle is both an elegant Renaissance castle and a monumental military fortress surrounded by major fortifications with bastions and ravelins and a great Danish tourist attraction.

 Some of the historical rooms house collections of Renaissance and Baroque interiors, and among the most important attractions are the 62-metre long ballroom, the wonderfully preserved chapel and the statue of " Holger the Dane ".

Helsingør or Elsinore (in English) is the home of the famous Kronborg Castle, the setting for Hamlet and the resting place of Holger the Dane. No visit to Denmark is complete without a visit to Elsinore, but there is more to see and do than just visit Kronborg.

 Helsingor lies on the northeast coast of Sjaelland, an hour's train ride from Copenhagen. Across the Oresund is Helsingborg, Sweden, which can be reached by a short ferry ride. Visit Elsinore tour Excursions map PDF

Danish Maritime Museum

Helsingor also houses three very popular museums: The Oresund Aquarium, The Danish Maritime Museum and The Danish Museum of Science and Technology. The Oresund Aquarium or Oresundsakvariet is located just north of Kronborg castle and is a 20-minute walk from Helsingor train station. The aquarium is also a teaching school, so it is often crowded with children and students. Entrance fee ranges from 35 - 55 kroner. FREE entrance if you have the Copenhagen Card.

The Danish Maritime Museum is also known as Soefartsmuseet is located on the Kronborg grounds, but will soon be moving to a new location on the docks. The museum houses a large collection of maritime memorabilia. Perfect for those who have an interest in the sea and the men who made their lives sailing them.

The Danish Museum of Science and Technology / Teknisk Museum is probably one of my favorite museums, since it has such a large array of "toys for men". Everything from automobiles, planes, bicycles, motorbikes, electrical appliances, science experiments and much much more. Over 8000 square meters of interesting technology - nothing very modern, but fun to see how things have changed over the years. Entrance fee is 50 to 60 kroner, unless you use the Copenhagen Card and than it is FREE. In the summertime, the beaches north of Helsingor are quite famous for the fabulous bathing opportunities. The best are along the west coast off the Kattegut, about a 30-minute bus ride from Helsingor.

Café Olai reflects the old Elsinore in both atmosphere as interior, and even the prices are for 1/4 century ago.

Fredensborg Palace

Fredensborg Palace is the royal couple's residence in spring and autumn, and Chancellery Since 2004 Crown Prince Couple's residence at Fredensborg. The magnificent sprawling castle built bit by bit through the 1700s with the assistance of the century's best Danish architects.

Frederiksborg Castle Hillerød

Frederiksborg Castle was built between 1600 and 1620 by Christian IV.
To make room for the new Renaissance castle was the main part of an older building complex, which Frederick II had acquired in 1560, demolished.
The facility is located on three islands in the lake. The buildings on the southernmost island comes from Frederick II's time.

The castle is inspired by traditional Dutch style like many others of Christian IV's buildings for example Rosenborg Exchange.
A footpath allows you to walk around the castle lake.

 In 1622, it was great Neptune Fountain set. Broncefigurerne was made in Prague by the sculptor Adrian de Vries.
Swedish soldiers took the figures as war booty in 1659 and led them to Stockholm.
In 1888 the fountain was reconstructed with casts of the original characters.
