Christian 4. king of
Danmark |
Christian 4. was king of Denmark and Norway from 1588, but was first crowned 1596. Son of Frederick 2nd and Sophie of Mecklenburg. He was married to Anne Catherine of Brandenburg, who died in 1612 in which he in 1615 married the noble Kirsten Munk. He fathered more than 20 children, including Frederik 3 and Leonora Christine.
Christian 4 had received a thorough education when he was crowned. He sought to strengthen his kingdom among others by providing favorable conditions for trade. Militarily, he tried to make Denmark the leading Baltic power, but his involvement in the Thirty Years War 1625-1629 beat all wrong, and Sweden could then gradually take over the leading position in the Nordic region. In a naval battle against a Swedish fleet in 1644 lost the king his right eye.
Christian 4 is one of Denmark's history's most colorful and popular kings. He was strong cultural interest, especially in music. Also as a builder, he was very active, and during his reign many new towns were founded, and a number of important buildings were erected, including the Stock Exchange, the Round Tower and Rosenborg Castle, where he died.
