Elsinore Home Page More infoVeteranship s/s Bjørn
The ship has for many years had the momentum as faithful icebreaker and tugboat . The vessel is representative of a ca. 100 -year era in Danish shipping - and shipbuilding history, the time between sailing ships and the modern motor ships.
It is a combined tug and icebreaker , which was built in 1908 and delivered to Randers Port Authority 1909 when it served as a tugboat and icebreaker .
s/s Bjørn was in operation until 1981, when the Danish veteran ship club for the conservation of old ships took over the S/S Bear 72 million, one penny for each active years , provided that the ship was restored .
restoration to bring the former icebreaker and tugboat back to its origins as coal-fired steamship carried out through nearly three decades of " Beagle Boys " , which consists of several generations of former shipyard workers and sailors , blacksmiths, ship builders , riggers , naval architects , engineers etc. - The common denominator is an experience with shipping and ship production at some point in their working lives.
Getting back to the ship's original equipment to restore hull, engine , boiler and outfitting as close to its origin has demanded craft skills , which has not been used for a long time . The renovation of the Bear has made such skills necessary again , and thus the people behind the Bear made
the restoration of living industrial history .
The project , as well as many Danish maritime details 1920-80 , described in a beautiful and thorough book ;
" From scrap to Beauty" , which was released in June 2013.
It can be purchased for kr 250 at Shipyard Museum in Elsinore , at bookstores Arnold Busck on Stone Street tel 23 4921 0128
or from Bent Hedegaard : formand@ss-bjoern.dk
